BD4NRG project

Big Data for Next Generation Energy (BD4NRG)

Big Data for Next Generation Energy (BD4NRG) is a consortium project of 32 companies and research institutions from the EU Member States under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program, Information and Communication Technologies call. The project started on 1 January 2021 and will last for 36 months. The value of the project is 11,883,025 EUR. The co-financing of the European Commission amounts to 9,929,912.50 EUR.

Intensive decentralization reveals new opportunities to use mass data and advanced analytics (machine learning, artificial intelligence) to support the power industry's decision-making. However, the broader exploitation of this potential is hindered by deficient mechanisms, including the lack of standardized mass data architectures for smart grids and underserved regulatory frameworks for data exchange between stakeholders. In this regard, the BD4NRG project will:

  • developed a reference architecture for Smart Energy, which will offer full interoperability of modern mass data technologies with standards for use in smart grids and operational concepts by connecting BDVA, SRIA, IDSA and FIWARE architectures,
  • improved technological solutions for the development of TRL 5-6 for data management, data pipeline management and the Internet of Things, and upgraded, loosely integrated and used them in the project segment with the level of technological development TRL 7-8,
  • developed a set of modular analytical tools of technological development TLR 8 for mass data analysis according to the principle of "all in one place" with a combination of legacy systems and third-party systems (data, computer resources, models, algorithms),
  • tested solutions with predictive and regulatory advanced mass data analysis on 13 large-scale pilots at project partners’ (transmission system operators, distribution system operators, electricity storage owners, renewable energy producers, municipalities, energy-rounded communities, electricity market participants, financial institutions and ENTSO-E) along the entire energy value chain.

ELES is bringing professional competencies from system operations and high-voltage infrastructure management, and a digital laboratory for pilot testing into the project. Electricity market transactions and electric power system are interconnected by a frequently overlooked link. Power system elements, their operation and ultimately maintenance are key pieces making the market transactions between electricity suppliers and customers possible. The mechanism to materialize them in the long run is network planning and development. Economic goals and new technologies require modern agile infrastructure.

The project will combine the advantages of modern business analytics with the activities of physical asset management. We will explore the flexibility and ways in existing workflows for abstract additions and the possible integration of market transaction needs in defining infrastructure maintenance schedules and predictive activities. The organizational areas directly active in the project are the asset and project management division, the telecommunications and informatics division, and the strategic innovations division.
