An Important Step in the Development of the Slovenian Electricity Market

On 21 October 2026, a new arrangement was introduced in the Slovenian day-ahead electricity market. The so-called Multi-NEMO Arrangement (MNA) enables multiple Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs) to operate simultaneously within the same market.

The new arrangement was implemented in cooperation with ELES, the Energy Agency, BSP SouthPool, CROPEX, Nord Pool and other partners involved in European electricity market coupling processes. The project required extensive expert and regulatory coordination, the establishment of a contractual framework, adjustments to existing processes, and comprehensive testing.

What has actually changed?

In addition to BSP SouthPool, CROPEX and Nord Pool now also operate in the Slovenian day-ahead market. Market participants therefore have a wider choice of providers of power exchange services, while the new arrangement strengthens competition and further integrates the Slovenian market into the single European electricity market.

For ELES, the operational aspect is equally important. The operation of multiple power exchanges within the same bidding zone contributes to greater robustness of market processes and helps reduce risks in the event of disruptions or market decoupling, which can have significant financial consequences for transmission system operators.

The next step is to implement the MNA in the intraday market (SIDC), which is planned by the end of 2026. This will mark another step towards the further development of the Slovenian electricity market and its integration into the European electricity market.
